Defining a Calf, Cow, Bull Moose & Telling Them Apart

CALF moose is less than one year old at the time of the hunt.
COW moose is a female at least one year old at the time of the hunt.
BULL moose is a male moose at least one year old a the time of the hunt.

Calf moose appear to have a small nose and a "short face," are seldom alone, and appear to have more leg than body and their hindquarters appear slender. Shoulder height of a cow moose is six feet (2m) and a calf moose is four feet (1.3m).

If you happen to kill an animal with ear tags, radio collar, or any other marking device, please report the details to MNR. You will not be penalized in any way, they use the info you supply and it is appreciated.

Sealing and Transporting the Moose

The moose validation tag must be affixed to the hunting license. When a moose has been killed, the license holder who shot the moose must immediately after the kill and at the kill site, securely attach the game seal to the animal in the manner described on the seal. You must notch out the month, date, and time of kill on the game seal. As part of the Selective Harvest Program, validation tags are issued for a specific age and sex of moose. You must have evidence of the age and sex of any moose you kill.

For Bull or Cow Moose: Cut to one side of the scrotal sac or vulva when opening the animal for gutting - as shown with the dotted line in (a) and (b). Leave the scrotal sac or vulva attached by connective tissue. Then attach the seal to the tendon of the hind leg (c) - to which the scrotal sac or vulva is attached. Note the location in (b). To prevent the loss or damage of the seal (torn off) it could be protected by making a slice in the hide, tucking the seal under the skin, and wrapping with tape.

For Calves: Attach the seal to the lower jaw (d). The lower jaw must be kept whole (i.e. two sides must not be separated). You do not need to provide any proof of sex of calves. The lower jaw may be removed from the head as long as it is kept whole.

It is suggested you not eat the liver and kidneys because of concerns with cadmium levels in these internal organs.
